Outdoor Activities

Gift Vouchers for Experience Days Enquire Here > >

Outdoor activities are held in a private field on the estate with wonderful valley views.  Participants and spectators can keep dry and warm in our Hay Barn, a small barn with fully glazed doors opening on to a terrace overlooking the field and valley beyond.

Activity sessions are generally 9.30am - 12.30pm or 1pm - 4pm and include full instruction and expert guidance from an experienced instructor.  Groups of all sizes can be accommodated.  The minimum age for bird handling is 12 years old, otherwise all abilities and ages are welcome.

Refreshments are provided.  For anyone booking an activity in the morning and another in the afternoon a light lunch is available (ordered in advance).

External events of any size can also be organised.  Our falconer provides falconry displays at the the largest medieval festival in the UK,  held annually over the three days of August bank holiday at a 15th century moated castle in Herstmonceux, East Sussex.

For those booking all three farm buildings (sleeping 10-14) or all five buildings (sleeping 14-19) we are also offering an on-site activity session for everyone, such as bird handling or archery, for an additional cost of only £350 or £450.  These rates only apply to those staying at Fair Oak Farm.  Otherwise click here to contact our Activities Manager and view activity prices per person.

Birds of Prey

After a quick safety brief this session kicks off with one-to-one tuition and soon has you learning the skills of this ancient sport. After initial instruction you can improve your aim in time for the games which may take a more competitive edge!

A packed session with a gentle start getting to know the owls and some falconry tuition.  Experience the sensation of birds flying to your glove and witness the display of a bird flying in the valley, eventually swooping down to catch its prey.

Falconry Field Walks are also available for groups of 2-4 people.  Field Walks are only held during hunting season from October through to late February and generally not on Saturdays.  Field Walks are not suitable for disabled persons or children under 17 years old.  Four day falconry training courses are also available.

"Steven provided hands on experience with birds of prey as research for my novels.  His expertise and knowledge on these incredible creatures was second to none and his passion for falconry was infectious.  If you're looking to learn more about falconry or simply want to experience an extraordinary day out, you can't do better!"

Robyn Young, Author of the Brethren Trilogy

"...my feelings are of amazement and wonder - for the birds themselves, their individual characters and grace and your understanding of them.  Your skill in training and presenting them to the uninitiated is admirable and the structure and progression of the day designed to give the utmost pleasure and satisfaction.  Certainly I was left the wish that I could pursue this fascinating sport.  We will remember our day at Fair Oak Farm for ever!"

Guests staying at the farm can enjoy other services either at the farm or close by.

Our Chef can cook and serve for any occasion at the farm such as a dinner party, barbeque luncheon or breakfast.  Alternatively a delivery only service can be provided.  Our chef would be happy to discuss and plan a menu within your budget.

Cycles of all types and sizes can be dropped off and collected at the farm.  Instruction and safety gear is provided.  Guided tours and training is available for all levels of experience.

In a secluded location across the valley, Lakedown Trout Fishery was designed & created by pop legend Roger Daltrey and has four spring-fed lakes totalling approximately 26 acres.

Our beauty and massage therapist offers a pampering service for the ultimate in relaxation during your stay.

Transport & Parking

For those travelling by car, maps and directions are available.  Secure off-road parking is available on site.  Stonegate train station is 2.5 miles from the farm.  Journey time from London Charing Cross, Waterloo East, Cannon Street or London Bridge is about 70 mins. Local taxi services are available or we can provide a quotation for your transport requirements.

Note: Despite high demand, we are currently not accepting bookings for weddings and large events at the farm because we are keen to limit disruption and re-introduce farming on our land.  We recently re-allocated over 3 acres of development and garden use back to agricultural use.  We are also not taking bookings for clay pigeon shooting.  Although introduced in 2009 on a very small scale when a regular shoot on a neighbouring farm was discontinued, local larger shoots have now been re-introduced.  We would be more than happy to provide you with contact details for the organisers.
